Selecting a home care agency for yourself or your loved one can be a difficult choice. How do you know for certain the agency you're looking at is trusted and reliable?
One resource that is available to you are the results of state surveys that are performed bi-annually. Home health care agencies that participate in Medicare and Medicaid are required by federal law to undergo a bi-annual survey and recertification process by the centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Home care agencies must meet requirements of state law, Medicare, and Medicaid. Reputable home health agencies should have these reports available for you to review.
The home health survey measures the quality of care provided by the agency. If a home health agency is in violation of any regulation, the agency can be denied payment, face fines, have certification revoked, or given a time limit on a plan of correction.
The survey and recertification process exist to ensure that:
Home care agencies participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs are in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid requirements
Violations will be addressed promptly
Clients/patients receive high quality care
In the bi-annual survey, if the home care agency is found to be in violation of any regulation, it is recorded in a Survey Report Form. Any deficiencies that are reported by staff, patients or family members must be confirmed through records, interviews and observations by a Medicare surveyor. If the deficiency is not confirmed the agency will not be cited as deficient.
